Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

This nineteenth-century Victorian umbrella or stick stand is a practical English country house accessory rendered in warm brown oak and polished brass. The tall coopered vessel is constructed from vertical timber staves encircled by four evenly spaced riveted brass bands, topped with a distinctive flared brass rim, and punctuated by small metal pins along the wooden seams. Visible details include the rich grain and aged patina of the dark timber, contrasted against the gleaming metal hardware and the flared open top designed to catch drips. Measuring 76 cm tall by 20 cm in diameter, this slender cylindrical holder fits neatly in a hallway beside the front door to keep walking canes, umbrellas, and walking sticks organised and upright.

Popularised in the 19th and early 20th centuries, coopered umbrella stands were crafted using traditional barrel-making techniques where wooden staves were bound together with metal hoops to store walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas in entryways.

These pieces were built by coopers who fitted shaped oak staves together without glue, securing the structure tightly with riveted brass or copper bands and often adding a flared metal collar or internal liner.

Look for signs of age such as hand-riveted brass bands, natural oxidisation on metal surfaces, minor irregularities from hand-planed oak staves, and appropriate wear around the base and inner rim.

Position the stand near an entryway console table or front door to provide practical storage for walking sticks and umbrellas, adding warm wood tones and historical texture to contemporary hallways.

Dust the wooden staves regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to nourish the oak, taking care to avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the original patina from the brass bands.
