An English country 19th Century cricket table, this side table exemplifies vernacular design with a dark brown finish over oak. The piece has a circular top set above a three-legged base with turned legs and an apron frame, showing a collar at the base of one leg, surface distressing, and paint loss. Measuring 60 cm high, 58.5 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep, it provides a compact surface for everyday use. Positioned in a living room, this rustic farmhouse table serves as a convenient end table beside a sofa or an armchair, as well as a lamp stand. The traditional three-legged construction ensures stability on stone floors while adding character to the interior through its patinated surfaces and historic repairs.

A cricket table is a traditional three-legged side table originating in the British Isles during the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, named after the three vertical stumps used in the game of cricket. The three-legged construction was designed specifically to remain stable on uneven stone or flagstone floors.

Antique cricket tables were typically crafted from native regional hardwoods such as oak, elm, ash, or fruitwood, though softwood versions in pine were also produced. They feature a circular timber top supported by three turned legs joined to an apron frame.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-hewn surfaces, historic timber shrinkage along the grain of the circular top, and hand-cut joinery. Look for natural wear around the feet, wooden pegs, and aged patination rather than uniform modern machine cuts.

A cricket table functions as a compact side table beside an armchair, a drinks table, or an accent piece in an entryway. Its historic timber patination and simple geometry provide visual texture and balance in both contemporary and traditional room schemes.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Position the piece away from direct radiator heat and damp areas to prevent warping or splitting of the historic timber.
