A 19th Century Oak Plank Top and Pine Base Cricket Table, 76cm Diameter

19th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A 19th Century Oak Plank Top and Pine Base Cricket Table, 76cm diameter.

A handsome English oak antique cricket table with a 76cm diameter, round plank top, upon a pine triform base with slightly splayed and tapered legs.

Recently back from our professional workshop where it was sympathetically restored, gentle conservation to ensure it’s solid, straight and all joints are tight, it now sits well, structurally excellent with a fine even colour wax.

A superbly stylish side or hall table, breakfast table or easily portable for outside tea table, lunch etc.., a versatile and considerably appealing antique cricket table if good scale, we estimate dates circa 1800 with evidence of obvious timeworn repairs to the base which is very often the case with these simple, vernacular-regional tables.

This rustic country side table is a nineteenth-century cricket table dating from around 1800. The piece displays a round dark brown oak plank top resting on a pine triform base with three splayed, tapered and chamfered legs. Following recent professional workshop restoration, the structure is straight with tight joints, presenting a fine even colour wax finish and timeworn repairs to the base. Measuring 68 cm high by 76 cm wide and 76 cm deep, the table provides a portable surface of good scale. In a modern home, this versatile vernacular piece functions well as an end-of-a-sofa side table, a hall table, a small breakfast table, or an easily movable table for tea and lunch in the garden. Its compact three-legged construction allows it to fit neatly into tight corners and smaller living spaces, offering practical utility alongside historic character.

A cricket table is a traditional three-legged table that originated in rural Britain during the sixteenth century and remained popular through the nineteenth century. The three-legged design was engineered to provide stability on uneven stone or earth floors in cottages and pub settings.

Cricket tables were typically constructed from native hard and soft woods, most commonly oak, pine, ash, or elm. These vernacular pieces frequently featured a thick planked top supported by a sturdy timber frame with chamfered or turned legs.

Authentic pieces generally display period joinery techniques, such as pegged joints, hand-planed surfaces, and uneven wear consistent with age. Look for historical timber shrinkage, original patination in recessed areas, and hand-cut construction rather than modern machine precision.

A cricket table functions effectively as an accent table beside an armchair, an occasional table in a hallway, or a nightstand in a bedroom setting. Its compact three-legged profile brings tactile timber texture and historic character to modern minimalist or eclectic interiors.

Preserve the natural timber patination by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the wood from warping or splitting.
