Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Segmented timber veneers: technique established at the Mysore workshops from the early 1900s.
Visible grain in the tusks: pale timber veneer rather than ivory inlay.
Varied exotic grain orientations: skilled manual fret cutting to depict animal hide and foliage.
Even mellowing across the veneers: age-related oxidisation of the natural wood tones.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large wall art panel from the Anglo-Indian period dates to 1900. Crafted in warm brown teak, rosewood, and satinwood timber veneers, the piece is set within a stepped moulded wood frame. The intricate inlaid marquetry depicts a detailed landscape scene with a herd of elephants bathing in a river surrounded by trees, distant mountains, and woodland. Visible details include varied natural wood tones forming the animals, foliage, and scenery. Measuring 102 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the artwork hangs easily above a sideboard in a gentleman's library, hallway, or dining room interior. The panel brings character and traditional craftsmanship to a residential wall space as a focal point.

Marquetry is the decorative art of applying thin veneers of contrasting timber to a structural substrate to form intricate patterns, landscapes, or figurative scenes. Popular throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these panels frequently depicted flora, fauna, and architectural views.

Craftspeople utilise a variety of indigenous and imported hardwoods, such as rosewood, satinwood, teak, walnut, and ebony, selected for their distinct grain patterns and natural shade variations. The individual veneer pieces are cut by hand, fitted together, glued to a backing board, and sealed with varnish or French polish.

Authentic period pieces feature natural tonal variations in the timber created through ageing rather than modern chemical dyes. Inspecting the reverse often reveals historic backing boards, hand-cut veneer joints, and faint surface shrinkage lines along the wood grain.

A large wooden marquetry panel adds texture and warmth when mounted against a neutral or rich dark wall backdrop. Positioning it directly above a console table or sideboard creates a clear focal point in contemporary or traditional schemes.

Keep the panel away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the thin timber veneers from warping or lifting. Dust the surface using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a light coat of beeswax polish occasionally to protect the timber finish.
