19th century
Description

A fabulous Scottish Ladies Work Table in satinwood with ebony cockbeading on the drawers, ebony details and rosewood handles. Two drawers to the front and blind drawers to the rear. The slide has never been fitted with a work bag rather thankfully as it would detract from the elegance of the piece.

Not only is it a slim and elegant piece but it has the most fantastic legs! 23" wide, 16.5" deep by 29" tall. Dating around 1820.

This Scottish Regency ladies work table dates from around 1820 and combines fine satinwood construction with a warm golden brown finish. The rectangular top sits above two functional drawers to the front fitted with rosewood round knobs, complemented by ebony cockbeading, ebony details and diamond escutcheons. The understructure incorporates spiral turned legs finished with brass castors, adding distinct visual character to the piece. Measuring 58 cm wide by 42 cm deep and 74 cm tall, the table functions well as an occasional table in a living room, study or bedroom, or positioned conveniently at the end of a sofa. Its compact proportions and refined design suit traditional or classic interiors as a practical surface for everyday use.

Popularised during the early nineteenth century, a Regency ladies work table was designed for domestic activities such as needlework, embroidery, and correspondence, often featuring specialized drawers, drop leaves, or internal compartments.

Cabinetmakers during this era frequently utilised fine hardwoods such as satinwood, rosewood, and mahogany, incorporating dovetail joint construction, reeded or turned legs, and brass castors.

Authentic Regency pieces display early nineteenth-century construction traits such as hand-cut dovetails, solid timber drawer linings, period brass hardware or turned wooden knobs, and turned or spiral-carved leg profiles.

These compact furniture pieces function efficiently as occasional side tables beside a sofa, unique bedside tables in a bedroom, or accent tables within an entryway.

To maintain the timber finish, dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent fading or timber movement.
