Victorian Oak Decorative Console Side Table 1900s

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A fabulous looking decoratively carved English Victorian oak console table which would be the perfect way to brighten up a hallway or living room. The table enjoys some wonderful carving of real skill, delightfulness and charm including some little “stars” to the upstand and front, with a slightly menacing looking face to the high arched back plinth! Overall a great looking piece in lighter waxed oak.

It sits well with sensible wear but nothing nasty and is ready for placing in your desired space after a session in our workshop.

A fine looking table perfect for both a period and modern home, English C1900.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Star-punch background texturing: typical hand technique found in late Victorian and Edwardian woodcarving.
Quarter-sawn oak top showing medullary rays: traditional timber selection for turn-of-the-century cabinet work.
Hand-gouged guilloche frieze and grotesque mask: classic late 19th-century Jacobean revival motifs.
Wear to the raised carving and feet: natural handling over more than a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

FAQs

Late Victorian carved oak furniture often drew inspiration from Gothic, Renaissance, and Jacobean traditions. These pieces feature relief carving, scrolling foliage, mask motifs, and sturdy timber joinery.

Victorian craftspeople primarily used solid European oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joints to secure the frame. Surfaces were decorated with hand-carved details and finished with spirit varnish or dark wax polishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and genuine surface oxidation. Construction features like hand-planed backboards and slight irregularities in carved details distinguish historical items from modern machine-made reproductions.

Position the console table against a plain, light-toned wall to highlight the detailed timber carvings. Accent the top surface with minimalist ceramic vessels or a contemporary mirror to create a balanced contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry, soft cloth along the carved channels. Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, and keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
