Description

A very good example of these desirable tripod tables from the last quarter of the 18thc....this one has the added benefit of being a "tilting" tripod, so when not in use the top can be tilted up , so as not to take up too much room. The top is made of fruitwood with a turned oak pillar with Neo-classical urn shape, very popular at this time....the oak legs are of cabriole form and terminate in attractive shaped toes....excellent colour as you would expect from aged oak & fruitwood.....and in very nice condition.

English. C1780-90.

This 18th-century English Georgian occasional table belongs to the country house tradition of practical furniture. The circular top comprises warm brown fruitwood planks joined together, paired with an oak pedestal that includes a turned baluster stem with a Neo-classical urn shape and a tilt-top mechanism. Three curved cabriole legs support the structure, terminating in pad feet on the floor. Surface wear appears naturally across the aged timber, showing deep patination and grain variations. Measuring 66.7 cm high, 52.1 cm wide, and 50.8 cm deep, the table fits naturally beside the end of a sofa or in a corner of a living room or study. The tilting top mechanism allows the surface to fold vertically for compact storage when not in use. A small brass candlestick rests on the tabletop surface, demonstrating a traditional display use in a modern interior setting.

FAQs

Originating in the early 18th century, tripod tables were designed as portable, versatile occasional furniture for tea drinking, reading, and displaying light sources. Their three-legged configuration ensured stability on uneven timber floorboards commonly found in period homes.

Craftsmen typically constructed these tables using native hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, elm, or mahogany. The tilt-top mechanism relied on a wooden block and iron or brass catch, mounted onto a lathe-turned central column supported by hand-dovetailed cabriole legs.

Authentic 18th-century examples display signs of hand-planing, slight shrinkage across the circular top, and period-correct iron or brass tilt catches. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints securing the legs into the base of the central column.

Position the piece alongside an armchair as a functional drinks table, or place it in a reading nook. Alternatively, tilt the circular top vertically when not in use to display the natural wood grain and conserve floor space.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
