Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Sutherland table dates from around 1880 and is made from walnut and burr walnut in a warm brown colour. The piece has a hinged drop leaf design with a rectangular top surface, twin upright supports, and spiralled barley twist legs. Splayed feet fitted with white ceramic castors support the base, while decorative moulding runs along the table edge. The construction folds down to a compact depth of 19 cm, measuring 70 cm in height and 102 cm in width when fully opened. In a modern interior, this versatile occasional table sits comfortably at the end of a sofa or against a hallway wall. The drop leaves provide extra surface area when needed for drinks or books, and fold flat to save space in smaller rooms. Traditional construction and practical design make the piece well-suited to everyday use in a sitting room or drawing room.

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a compact drop-leaf table introduced in the mid-19th century, named after the Duchess of Sutherland. It features a narrow fixed centre section with deep leaves that drop down, supported by swing-out legs or gates to conserve space.

Victorian Sutherland tables were crafted primarily from fine hardwoods including walnut, burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. They frequently incorporate hand-carved barley twist or turned legs, twin end supports, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature narrow main tops, deeply proportioned drop leaves, hand-turned or carved leg supports, original rule-jointed edges, and period-correct iron hinges paired with small castors.

Due to its slender profile when folded, a Sutherland table functions effectively positioned at the end of a sofa, inside an entry hallway, or as an occasional tea surface in smaller living rooms.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish along the wood grain annually. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying and veneer lifting.
