This Victorian two-tier Sutherland table dates from circa 1870 and serves as an occasional table in an English Country House style. Constructed from burr walnut, walnut, and brass, it presents a warm brown colour with rich, deep golden tones and satinwood cross-banded drop leaves. The piece stands on brass casters with shaped feet, featuring turned spindles supporting each tier and fine mouldings along the top edge. When closed, it measures 75 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep. Ideal for placement at the end of a sofa, this versatile occasional table functions practically for serving afternoon tea or displaying items when opened. The burr and figured walnut veneers display a good patina across both tiers, while the compact folded depth suits smaller spaces in a living room or parlour. The structure combines two drop-leaf surfaces linked by turned supports and feet on casters for mobility.

A Sutherland table is a mid-nineteenth-century British drop-leaf table featuring a very narrow central section and deep hinged leaves, designed to collapse into a slim profile when not in use.

Victorian Sutherland tables were traditionally constructed using fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently enhanced with burr veneers, turned wood spindles, and brass casters.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned column supports, original brass ceramic or metal casters, narrow central top planks, and swing-out legs or gates that support the drop leaves.

Due to its compact dimensions when folded, a Sutherland table functions as a versatile occasional drink table beside a sofa or as a slim console in an entryway.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, keep the piece away from direct heat sources to protect the wood veneer, and apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically.
