Solomonic columns, characterised by their distinctive twisted or helical shafts, gained immense popularity during the Baroque period of the 17th and 18th centuries, heavily influenced by the famous baldachin in St Peters Basilica designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

These decorative elements are typically carved from solid timber, such as pine or hardwood, then finished with a layer of gesso, white paint, and hand-applied gold leaf or gilt detailing to create an opulent surface texture.

Authentic 18th-century pieces generally exhibit hand-carved irregularities in the helical twist, genuine age-related crackleur in the painted and gilded surfaces, and traditional tool marks on the reverse or mounting points.

They are often mounted vertically as architectural wall art, used to frame a central doorway, or displayed on specialist stands as sculptural decorative objects to add verticality and historical contrast to modern spaces.

Preservation requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster and the strict avoidance of water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners, which can easily damage fragile historic gold leaf and gesso layers.
