FAQs

An antique mahogany gaming table, commonly referred to as a card table or games table, is a specialised item of furniture produced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries specifically for card playing and tabletop games. These tables feature a hinged fold-over top that rotates or unfolds to reveal an interior playing surface usually lined with felt or baize.

These tables were primarily built using dense, fine-grained solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcass wood. The interior playing field was fitted with woollen baize fabric, and structural hinges or swivel mechanisms were constructed from cast brass and timber joints.

Authentic pieces from the early nineteenth century feature period-specific construction details, including hand-cut dovetails, original brass castors, and hand-carved decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves or paw feet. Examining the underside will often reveal hand-planed secondary timbers and natural oxidisation consistent with age.

When closed, a games table functions as an occasional side table or console table positioned against a wall or behind a sofa. Unfolded, it creates an interactive focal point in a living room, library, or study for social board games.

Clean the woodwork using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish along the grain to maintain the timber patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources, and clean the interior wool baize surface using a soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
