This Victorian extending book slide originates from England, dating to circa 1870. The novel rest takes the form of an ebonised wooden desk accessory finished in a deep black hue, comprising a flat extending base and two upright hinged end panels. Each upright features intricate pierced fretwork with a central regal crown motif, complemented by hand-drawn gilt detail along the edges and small visible metal hinge hardware at the base joints. The timber displays a gently patinated appearance with signs of age across the dark surfaces. Measuring 14.5 cm high, 32.5 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, the piece extends to accommodate a growing selection of books. Suitable for use in a study, library, office desk, or reading room, the folding hinged ends allow the slide to collapse for convenient storage when not in use. The expanding slide mechanism supports novels, journals, or desktop reference works, while protective baize lines the base to safeguard furniture surfaces. The versatile design functions effectively upon a desk, table, or bookshelf within a gentleman's library or contemporary reading nook.

FAQs

Popularised during the Victorian period, an extending book slide is an adjustable desktop accessory designed to hold a varying quantity of books upright between two decorative end panels.

Victorian craftsmen commonly used hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, rosewood, and ebonised timber, often embellished with brass fittings, mother-of-pearl, or intricate fretwork panels.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, sliding tongue-and-groove or metal runner mechanisms, original hinge hardware on folding ends, and natural signs of wear on the base wood.

Position the slide on an office desk, console table, or library shelf to display leather-bound volumes, art catalogues, or curated hardback books, adding historic character.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the black ebonised finish and prevent the wood from drying out.
