Description

Royal Worcester antique (1897-1911) pair of Greek porcelain figurines playing lute and castanets modelled by James Hadley. These sublime figures capture the ethereal grace of Greek musical performers with extraordinary delicacy and precision. Dressed in flowing golden-hued robes that seem to undulate with musical rhythm, they showcase Hadley's remarkable skill in rendering fabric's complex drape and movement. Each rests on a circular base with the Royal Worcester mark and model numbers 1827/8 on the bottom. 32-33cm high x 10.3cm base, weight 1.65kg (pair).

Excellent original condition.

James Hadley (1837-1903) was an English potter and artist associated with the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company In 1875, he left the company and set up his own modelling studio in Worcester High Street, but although no longer directly employed by Royal Worcester he sold almost his complete output of models for ornamental vases and figures to them. He has been described by English porcelain expert John Sandon as "probably the finest English modeller of all time".

Date of Manufacture

Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art has dated these Royal Worcester Porcelain Figurines to the 19th Century.

Royal Worcester has a long heritage dating back to 1751, renowned for producing high-quality bone china and porcelain, including finely modelled figural works by notable artists such as James Hadley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces are typically crafted from fine porcelain or parian ware, featuring hand-painted polychrome details, gilt highlights, and intricate moulding characteristic of Victorian ceramic production.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the underside for factory impressed or printed backstamps, shape numbers, registration marks, and the distinctive quality of the hand-painting and modelling.

They can be displayed as focal points on a mantelpiece, within a glazed cabinet, or atop a side table to add classic craftsmanship and refined texture to a room.

Clean gently with a soft, dry feather duster or microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or exposure to direct sunlight to protect the fragile glaze and gilding.
