This Japanese Meiji period shibayama panel dates from 1890 and depicts three geishas in a garden scene. The rectangular wall art consists of a black urushi lacquer plaque with hand painted and gilded decoration, set within a later black and gilt wooden frame with stepped mouldings. The imagery incorporates hand carved ivory, bone, and mother-of-pearl inlays forming the figures of women in traditional kimono dress, one holding a parasol and another carrying a fan, positioned beneath a blossoming tree alongside distant pagoda architecture and pine trees. The overall piece measures 31 cm high by 38 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this framed wall art suits display on a staircase wall or within a gentleman's library setting. The dark ground contrasts with the pale figural inlays and golden foliage details, while the construction includes secure corner joints and a flat rear profile for hanging. The composition demonstrates traditional craft techniques combining lacquerwork with delicate sculptural inlays, producing a decorative panel suited for interior wall mounting in living spaces or hallways.

Shibayama is a Japanese art form involving the inlay of precious materials such as ivory, mother-of-pearl, bone, and tortoiseshell onto a base of wood or lacquer, typically depicting figures, flora, and fauna.

These pieces generally utilise a wooden core coated with layers of urushi lacquer, decorated with meticulously carved bone, ivory, shell, and gold powder hiramaki-e details.

Authenticity is usually determined by the precision of the inlay work, the depth and quality of the natural materials used, the characteristics of the black lacquer ground, and the presence of maker signatures or signature plaques on the reverse.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points on neutral walls, mounted independently or paired with minimalist contemporary furniture to highlight the contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of natural inlays and lacquer, maintaining stable humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using liquid cleaners.
