Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Hand-cut drawer dovetails: cabinet making before machine cutting.
Rough-sawn pine backboard: secondary timber typical of the mid-19th century.
Old ink stains inside the drawer: long domestic use.
Fine surface marks and mellow patina on the top: years of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This small mid nineteenth-century French console table is produced in solid walnut around 1840, presenting a warm brown colour with a restored, cleaned, and waxed finish. The rectangular top sits above a single slim frieze drawer fitted with brass ring handles and an Empire style escutcheon plate featuring crossed cornucopia. Curving front supports lead down to carved paw feet resting on a concave lower plinth shelf with turned pad feet, complemented by straight rear legs. Measuring 85 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 39.5 cm deep, the table fits neatly into a hallway beside the front door or in a compact reception room for practical surface storage.

A console table is a narrow table designed to stand against a wall, originally developed in 17th-century France as a decorative pier table supported by wall brackets or curved legs.

During the mid-19th century, cabinetmakers typically constructed console tables using solid walnut or walnut veneers over pine framing, accessorised with cast brass drop handles and lock escutcheons.

Authentic pieces from this period display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural oxidisation on original brass fittings, and signs of hand-planing on the secondary timber framing.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway beneath a simple wall mirror, displaying minimal modern ceramics on top to balance historic craftsmanship with contemporary style.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiators, dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the finish.
