Antique Victorian Carved Walnut Console / Side Table

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Victorian carved walnut console / side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880’s period.

It is of exceptional quality and is a very useful size. There is wonderful, detailed carving around all the edges, the top is beautifully shaped and has a slightly raised edge. The single drawer is pulled out with a leather handle that is fixed inside the drawer. The back of this is also nicely finished.

We have had this revived and re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with a lovely patina. The solid walnut top has has some small historic movement to the construction where the wood was joined, seen in the images. This is part and parcel of what sometimes happens with antique solid wood furniture, it doesn’t affect the look much and certainly doesn’t affect the use.

This Victorian console table originates from England around 1880, constructed from solid walnut with a warm brown finish. The serpentine top has a slightly raised edge, complemented by detailed carving around the edges, a carved apron, and slender cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. A single drawer integrates into the frieze. Measuring 77 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, this piece provides a practical surface for everyday items. In a modern interior, this console functions effectively in a hallway beside the front door or in a living room as a side table for lamps and decorative objects. The compact proportions suit entryways and narrower circulation spaces, while the finished back allows placement in open-plan areas where the piece remains visible from multiple angles.

Victorian Rococo Revival design emerged during the mid-19th century, drawing inspiration from 18th-century French furniture. Key features include naturalistic floral carvings, serpentine shapes, cabriole legs, and curved silhouettes executed in rich hardwoods like walnut and rosewood.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era predominantly utilised walnut, mahogany, and rosewood for fine occasional tables. Solid timbers were frequently paired with highly figured veneers to highlight intricate grain patterns on tops and aprons.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-carved details, hand-cut dovetail joints where drawers are present, and original wood shrinkage or minor patination. Examining the underside often reveals secondary woods like pine or oak, alongside hand-planing marks.

A Victorian console table can be placed against a neutral hallway wall to highlight its carved silhouette. Pair it with a modern mirror mounted above and simple ceramic accessories to create visual balance between traditional and contemporary elements.

Maintain walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and finish degradation.
