FAQs

A Welsh church sampler is a traditional piece of needlework typically created by young girls in the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring embroidered depictions of local chapels or churches alongside alphabets and religious verses.

Authentic antique samplers were typically stitched using linen or linsey-woolsey as a foundation fabric, decorated with silk, wool, or cotton embroidery threads.

Authenticity is identified through the examination of natural fibre ageing, hand-spun thread characteristics, original framing materials, and the presence of period-accurate stitches and lettering styles.

An antique sampler can be displayed as a focal point on a neutral wall or gallery display, pairing traditional textiles with contemporary minimalist frames or surrounding decor to create textural contrast.

Samplers should be framed behind UV-protective glass, kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and handled minimally to protect fragile historic threads and ground fabrics.
