This late Victorian gentleman's library writing table dates from 1890 in a traditional style. The construction is solid oak with a medium brown timber finish, complemented by a brown rexine inset top. The piece stands on turned fluted legs finished with brass castors and features two drawers fitted with brass drop handles. The maker's mark "Selbat" appears on the piece, indicating its origin. The table measures 74 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 89 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical desk functions as a study writing table or a hallway console surface. The classic proportions and traditional aesthetic integrate well into home offices or living spaces, providing a dedicated work surface with integrated storage drawers.

Victorian oak writing tables typically features sturdy solid oak construction, turned or fluted legs, brass hardware, and a leather inset writing surface known as a skiver. Designed for domestic studies and library spaces, they balance utility with substantial, classical proportioning.

These tables were primarily built using solid oak or mahogany, often lined with gilded or blind-tooled leather writing surfaces. Secondary woods such as pine or ash were frequently used for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles and brass wheel castors.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, original brass castors, and natural wear patterns along the kneehole and edges. Examining the underside reveals hand-sawn timber marks and dark, unvarnished aged wood consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

An antique oak writing table serves effectively as a dedicated work desk or console table in a modern study or living room. Pairing warm timber tones with contemporary lighting and modern seating creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and current design.

The oak wood should be maintained with periodic applications of natural beeswax, wiping along the direction of the grain. The leather skiver requires gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth and specialist leather balm to prevent drying, cracking, or surface peeling over time.
