Description

One beautiful hand-crafted antique Kilim cushion, with a soft brown corduroy backing to compliment the stunning ancient colours and this cushion has a soft feather insert.  This cushion has been created using an antique Anatolian Aydin kilim from circa 1870, which was beyond restoration.  The early dyes using rare greens, aubergine, orange dyes and soft reds are truly wonderful. As this a very old piece of kilim it does have some marks on there, due to the kilims age.

Each piece used for a cushion has been washed, but occasionally old marks are unable to be removed as this kilim is around 155 years old. There are eight cushions in total made from the same kilim - see all the images attached below.

Aydin is a region in the western area of Konya in Anatolia, located near the mediterranean and is famous for its traditional kilim weaving.  Aydin kilims were woven in varying designs from prayer kilims to large kilims woven in two halves.  A small hook motif derived from the eight-pointed star was used as an infill or border motif.  The area today is an agricultural area where weaving has sadly ceased.

Purchase this antique Kilim cushion online and we will deliver it to your home.  You are very welcome to visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey to see our entire collection.  We are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kilim cushions are crafted from fragments of traditional flatweave carpets historically made by nomadic and tribal peoples across the Middle East, Caucasus, and Central Asia. These textiles were originally produced for utilitarian purposes like floor coverings, grain bags, and tent hangings before being repurposed into home decor items.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for the face, often dyed with natural vegetable and mineral colorants, combined with a sturdy cotton or linen backing. The flatweave technique involves interlocking weft threads tightly across vertical warp threads to create geometric patterns without a pile.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of hand-spun wool with slight irregularities in texture, natural organic dye variations, and authentic wear consistent with age. Examination of the weave structure reveals the characteristic slit-weave technique inherent to genuine flatweave carpets.

These pieces function well as accent elements on neutral sofas, armchairs, or beds, introducing texture, colour, and global eclecticism to contemporary spaces. They bridge traditional and modern design schemes by adding rich visual history and geometric contrast.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming with a low-suction attachment through a mesh screen to protect fragile fibres, alongside professional specialist dry cleaning when necessary. Direct, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight should be avoided to prevent natural dyes from fading.
