FAQs

Antique gilt frames gained prominence in European interior design during the 17th and 18th centuries, evolving through various artistic movements such as Baroque, Rococo, and Victorian eras to complement fine art and mirrors.

Traditional frames are typically constructed from carved timber, such as pine or hardwood, coated with gesso (a mixture of plaster and glue) and finished with thin layers of gold leaf or gilt paint.

Authenticity is identified through hand-carved details, the presence of genuine gold leaf exhibiting natural oxidisation, period-appropriate joinery at the corners, and craquelure or ageing within the underlying gesso layers.

Such frames can be integrated into contemporary spaces by hanging them empty as minimalist wall art, pairing them with modern abstract canvases to create a striking contrast, or using them to frame large bespoke mirrors.

Gilded items should be kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity. Cleaning requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush; moisture and chemical cleaning agents must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate gold leaf.
