Produced during the 19th century, these frames feature elaborate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs executed in gesso over a timber core before being finished with gold gilding.

Craftsmen used softwood or hardwood profiles for structural support, coated with layers of gesso plaster and moulded compost decoration, followed by hand-applied leaf gilding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface crazing in the gesso, evidence of reddish clay bole beneath worn gilded areas, and traditional mitred timber joinery on the reverse.

Antique gilt frames are frequently displayed empty as sculptural wall art, leaned against walls on mantels, or used to frame contemporary art prints for curated visual contrast.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water-gilded surfaces and erode underlying gesso detailing.
