This pair of Arts and Crafts pedestal stands belongs to the Aesthetic Movement and dates to the eighteenth century. Each stand has a square top with a black lacquer finish, accented by gilt details along the edges. Scalloped aprons beneath the top feature turned pendant finials at the corners. The structural design incorporates splayed scroll legs united by spindle stretchers, creating an architectural silhouette typical of Victorian and Gothic influences associated with the period. Standing 102 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, these stands suit an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study. They function well for displaying decorative objects such as vases, urns, sculptures, or table lamps. The ebonised wood construction combines with gilding and lacquer work to offer a striking contrast of black and gold tones throughout the pieces.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasised art for arts sake, drawing inspiration from Anglo-Japanese design, delicate turnings, ebonised finishes, and gilding.

These stands were typically crafted from hardwoods such as beech or oak, which were stained or lacquered black to imitate ebony and highlighted with gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentic period pieces show genuine age-related wear to the gilding, natural shrinkage marks along wood joinery, hand-turned finials, and original square nut or peg construction underneath.

Position them symmetrically in empty room corners, beside fireplace alcoves, or flanking an entryway to elevate botanical arrangements, sculptures, or studio ceramics.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or solvents that could strip the delicate gilding and clear lacquer layers.
