Painted folding screens originated in ancient China during the Han dynasty before spreading to Japan and eventually Europe via trade routes in the 17th and 18th centuries, where they were prized as both decorative artworks and functional partitions.

Traditional folding screens typically feature solid wood panels joined by metal hinges, prepared with a gesso ground layer, and finished with oil or tempera hand-painted artwork.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate pigments, hand-forged or early cast brass hinges, natural wood shrinkage cracks, and surface wear consistent with age and traditional craftsmanship.

A painted screen can function as a striking focal point against neutral walls, serve as a partition in an open-plan space, or act as an alternative to traditional wall art.

Preserve antique screens by keeping them away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaning agents.
