This Victorian Gothic side table originates from around 1860 and takes a freestanding console form. It comprises a rectangular, removable flat top above a solid narrow structure with a moulded fore-edge, resting upon two solid trestle ends. The timber exhibits a warm brown pitch pine grain, complemented by turned columns facing the supports on all sides. Decorative details include carved flower heads on the raised ends of the top, alongside a central stretcher bracing the uprights with further carved floral motifs and a central rosette, all terminating in platform feet. The piece measures 89 cm high, 152 cm wide and 42 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a hallway beside the front door or in a narrow living space, it provides a functional surface for display.

Pitch pine was extensively used during the Victorian era, particularly in the late nineteenth century for ecclesiastical, institutional, and domestic furniture due to its high resin content, durability, and pronounced grain pattern.

Antique pitch pine tables were built using traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenon joints, turned dual uprights, pegged trestle structures, and solid timber tops designed for long-term stability.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct dense grain, a naturally darkened amber hue, substantial weight, and hand-cut joinery accompanied by characteristic period construction details on the underside.

A narrow pitch pine table serves effectively as a hallway console or behind a sofa, complemented by neutral wall finishes, contemporary ceramics, and an architectural wall mirror to balance the warm wood tones.

Maintain pitch pine furniture by dusting regularly with a dry soft cloth and applying beeswax polish annually, while avoiding placement near direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
