FAQs

A Victorian console table is a narrow table produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), designed to stand against a hallway or living room wall. These tables typically feature rich hardwoods, decorative carvings, and curved cabriole legs.

Victorian console tables were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood. Craftsmen utilised hand-carving techniques for the legs and frame, often featuring dovetail joinery inside integrated drawers.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-carved details, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original turned timber knobs, and natural timber shrinkage or uneven patination along non-visible surfaces.

To style a Victorian console table in a modern setting, place a modern mirror or contemporary artwork directly above it to contrast the ornate woodwork. Keep surface decor minimalist with a single ceramic vessel or table lamp.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the grain to preserve the timbers natural lustre and protect against moisture.
