Early Victorian Carved Chiffonier

19th century
Description

Showroom Condition Early Victorian Carved Chiffonier/Console Table

Description:

Bring a touch of timeless elegance and masterful craftsmanship into your home with this stunning early Victorian chiffonier, currently presented in immaculate, showroom condition following an extensive professional restoration in our workshop.

This versatile piece, which functions beautifully as a substantial console table or chiffonier base, immediately commands attention with its graceful, serpentine-shaped top. This top is framed by an integrated, subtle low upstand, adding a refined boundary to the surface. Below, the elegant curved shape is echoed in the frieze and decorative, serpentine-shaped lower undertier shelf.

The defining features of this exceptional chiffonier are its intricately carved legs. They boast a dramatic, scrolling cabriole shape, culminating in dramatically detailed and deeply carved hairy paw feet—a truly remarkable and high-quality detail (refer to close-up image 3). Adding another layer of distinct character, the legs feature beautifully carved diamond-shaped lozenges set just above the ‘knees’ on each side (visible in image 4), contrasting beautifully with the smooth, polished curves of the frame.

Crafted from rich, beautifully grained wood with a warm, polished patina, this piece is in superb structural and cosmetic order. Having been meticulously refinished, it is ready to be placed immediately.

Its shallow depth makes it an ideal choice for placement in a hallway, where it would look magnificent beneath a large, period mirror. Alternatively, it would make a unique and sophisticated statement piece as a console in a living room, dining room, or even in a spacious bathroom, adding historical character to a modern space.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, a chiffonier is a piece of furniture similar to a small sideboard or console table, often featuring an undertier shelf, carved supports, and a raised rear splashback.

Early Victorian furniture makers predominantly utilised solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, constructed using traditional dovetail joinery and hand-carved wood detailing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, natural oxidation in timber cutouts, historical hand-carving variations, and heavy solid timber construction without modern fasteners.

Position the piece in a hallway or entry space as a focal display table, pairing its dark timber tone with contemporary artwork, neutral wall colours, or modern ceramic decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish periodically following the direction of the wood grain while keeping the surface out of direct sunlight.
