This Chinese four-panel screen room divider dates from 1920 in the Chinese Export Art Deco style, constructed from Chinese hardwood with black and red lacquer finishes. The piece incorporates hand-painted and bas relief countryside landscape panels depicting buildings, trees, water, and figures, surrounded by mother of pearl decoration, with arched top panels and bottom panels featuring hand-carved exotic birds and floral reliefs. The frames are cinnabar lacquered, and the structure is fitted with hinges and small circular feet at the base of each panel. Measuring 180.3 cm high, 218.4 cm wide, and 3.8 cm deep, the screen operates as a folding partition. In a contemporary home, this screen serves as a decorative room divider to separate living spaces, create private corners, or function as a backdrop against a wall in a bedroom, study, or living room. The folding mechanism allows the panels to be adjusted at various angles to fit the available floor space.

FAQs

Chinese folding screens, known as pingfeng, originated during the Eastern Zhou dynasty and evolved over centuries into highly decorative art objects. By the early 20th century, multi-panel lacquer screens featuring carved relief landscapes and precious inlays were widely exported to Western interiors.

These screens are typically constructed from wooden framework panels coated in multiple thin layers of natural tree resin lacquer. Decorative elements often incorporate hand-carved timber reliefs, painted mineral pigments, and inlaid mother-of-pearl shell.

Authentic period screens feature hand-carved relief panels rather than molded resin, joined timber construction with traditional brass hardware, and organic crazing or subtle surface wear to the lacquer finish consistent with age.

A multi-panel screen can be placed behind a sofa or bed as an architectural backdrop, used as a freestanding space divider in open-plan living areas, or mounted flat against a wall as large-scale artwork.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity fluctuation to prevent the timber from warping or the lacquer from cracking. Dust gently with a soft microfiber cloth and avoid liquid cleaners or wax polishes.
