Description

A 19th Century painted wooden Icon of Saint Antipas. In good overall condition and with just some minor losses commensurate with age.

According to Eastern Orthodox traditions, according to the Commentary on the Apocalypse of Andreas of Caesarea, it is believed that Saint Antipas was the Antipas referred to in Revelation 2:13, as the verse says:

"I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth."

According to Christian tradition, John the Apostle ordained Antipas as bishop of Pergamon during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero.

The traditional accounts go on to say Antipas was martyred during the reign of Nero (54-68) or Domitian, by burning in a brazen bull-shaped altar for casting out demons worshipped by the local population.

There is a tradition of holy oil ("manna of the saints") being secreted from the relics of Saint Antipas.

Saint Antipas is invoked for relief from toothache, and diseases of the teeth. On the calendars of Eastern Christianity, the feast day of Antipas is April 11.

Russian Orthodox icons are sacred religious images rooted in the Byzantine artistic tradition, serving as objects of veneration and spiritual windows to the divine since the medieval period.

Traditional icons are typically painted with egg tempera and gold leaf on a prepared wooden panel, often utilizing gesso over a linen canvas base applied to the wood.

Authenticity is determined by examining the wood grain, gesso composition, pigment aging, craquelure patterns, hand-carved panel construction, and traditional Cyrillic inscriptions.

An antique icon can be mounted on a neutral wall or displayed on a mantelpiece within a minimalist or eclectic interior to add historical depth and contemplative focal points.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures and relative humidity, avoiding direct sunlight, and keeping the wooden panel unwashed while dusting gently with a dry, soft brush.
