Taxidermy gained significant popularity during the Victorian era as a method for amateur and professional naturalists to preserve and display wildlife specimens within domestic interiors, reflecting a broader scientific and aesthetic fascination with the natural world.

Antique display cases typically utilised timber frames such as mahogany, oak, or ebonised wood, joined with hand-cut joints, and enclosed with float or cylinder glass panes to protect the preserved botanical and animal specimens from dust and moisture.

Authentic period pieces often feature older methods of preparation, hand-blown or early drawn glass with minor imperfections, historic backing papers, period hardware, and natural signs of ageing on the mounts and wooden frames.

These specimens can be integrated into cabinet displays, styled on bookshelves alongside natural history books, or used as focal points in studies and living spaces to add textural interest and a curated, cabinet-of-curiosities aesthetic.

Preservation requires keeping the specimen out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable room temperatures and low humidity to avoid material degradation, and gently dusting the exterior glass with a microfibre cloth.
