Tabletop globes gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as both educational tools and decorative accessories for studies and libraries, often reflecting the political borders and geopolitical names of their specific era of manufacture.

Traditional globes were typically constructed using a papier-mache or plaster sphere covered with printed paper gores, mounted on brass, bronze, or cast iron meridians, and supported by wooden or moulded composite bases.

Authenticity is determined by examining the cartographic details, such as historical country borders, colonial names, and transport routes, alongside the ageing characteristics of the paper, varnish, and metallic components.

An antique globe adds scholarly character when placed on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist furniture or complementing traditional dark wood libraries.

Preservation requires keeping the globe away from direct sunlight to prevent paper fading and varnish yellowing, maintaining stable humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth without using liquid cleaners.
