Description

This is a lovely 19th century lace folder, carved on both sides with roundels with flowers,  diamonds, a heart all within a chip carved border.

These lace folders were used to press and smooth finished lace panels, particularly delicate handmade lace ones.  Once the lace was created the panels would be dampened slightly and then pressed with the lace folder. The folder would be run gently over the lace and smooth the edges of the panels.

This lovely panel measures 14 cm l x 9 cm w.

Opus Antiques has dated this Antique Treen Lace Press to the 19th Century.

Treen refers to small, functional, handmade wooden domestic objects and utensils produced before the widespread use of plastics. These items were typically crafted by local artisans using traditional woodworking techniques.

Makers frequently utilised dense native hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, sycamore, or beech. Construction typically involved hand-carving, turning on a pole lathe, and surface decoration via chip-carving or incising.

Authentic items display tool marks consistent with hand-working, period-appropriate wear patterns, dry patination from age and handling, and shrinkage cracks or minor warping native to aged timber.

These tactile wooden objects provide warmth and historical contrast when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables. Their organic textures complement both minimalist and traditional spaces.

Keep wooden items out of direct sunlight and away from rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking. Dust gently with a dry cloth and avoid applying modern polishes or oils unless advised by a conservator.
