Door porters, or heavy door stops, gained popularity in the 19th century during the Victorian era as grand homes featured larger, heavier doors that required substantial weights to keep them open.

These items were typically produced using sand-casting techniques, pouring molten iron into moulds to create dense, durable objects with intricate surface details.

Authenticity is generally determined by surface texture, weight, signs of historical wear, and the presence of casting seams typical of nineteenth-century manufacturing processes.

Such pieces function well as sculptural floor objects or functional accessories in hallways and studies, adding industrial texture and historical weight to modern spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the metal dry, dusting with a soft brush, and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation without altering the patina.
