This Edwardian Neoclassical pedestal is formed from cream and gold banded onyx combined with gilt bronze and brass mounts. The structure incorporates a square abacus top plate above a detailed Corinthian capital, a slender cylindrical shaft, and a stepped square base supported by cast claw feet. Fine decorative elements include turned ormolu collars and ornate relief mouldings around the plinth. The column stands 113 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, and includes a rotating top mechanism. It is stable and functional for use in an empty room corner to display sculpture, urns, plants, or decorative art objects within a home interior.

Onyx pedestals gained widespread popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Inspired by classical Greco-Roman architecture, these pieces utilised imported stone and ornate metal mounts to display decorative items such as bronzes, ceramics, and marble busts.

Antique columns from around 1900 were typically crafted using solid or veneered stone, such as onyx, alabaster, or polished marble. They often featured cast brass, bronze, or ormolu embellishments for capitals and bases, secured together with an internal iron tension rod.

Authentic onyx columns demonstrate natural color variation, translucent veining, and a distinct coldness to the touch. Look for cast metal components with natural patination, threaded internal iron rods accessible from the underside, and minor age-related wear around the joins.

An antique column can be placed in an entry hall, living room alcove, or corner to create height and architectural structure. Top it with a bronze sculpture, classic terracotta vase, or a trailing plant to balance historic form with contemporary styling.

Clean onyx surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a mild pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic or abrasive chemical cleaners that etch stone. Dust gilt metal mounts lightly with a soft brush, refraining from harsh polishes that remove original patination.
