This 18th-century Georgian tripod table displays a warm brown finish across its circular top, showcasing prominent medullary rays within the timber. The construction includes a vase-shaped turned baluster column resting above three splayed cabriole legs with pad feet, and a tilt-top mechanism that holds the surface upright. Visible details comprise a replaced catch on the underside and surface signs of age throughout the wood. The practical dimensions measure 69 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 77 cm deep. In a modern home, this occasional table suits a fireplace alcove as a functional display surface or functions well as a breakfast or supper table when lowered. The piece fits comfortably into traditional English country house interiors where compact antique furniture is required for everyday use.

A Georgian tilt-top tripod table is a compact occasional table developed in eighteenth-century Britain. It typically features a round top hinged to a central turned pedestal, supported by three curved cabriole legs, allowing the top to tilt vertically when not in use.

These tables were primarily crafted from native hardwoods such as English oak and walnut, alongside imported mahogany. Construction techniques involved hand-planed timbers, turned columns, and hand-forged iron or brass catch mechanisms to secure the tilting top.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including asymmetric turned columns, hand-cut dovetails under the block, and original iron latch mechanisms. Natural shrinkage of the timber top over time often creates an slightly oval shape rather than a perfect circle.

A tilt-top table functions effectively as a side table beside an armchair or within a fireside alcove. When tilted vertically, it can be displayed against a wall or in a room corner to showcase the timber grain as an accent piece.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and applying a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
