Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Turned beech with stained scorch marks: typical late 19th-century faux-bamboo work.
Single-slotted screw fixings: cabinet hardware standard before modern cross-head screws.
Steam-bent beech upper stem: traditional French bentwood technique of the period.
Soft surface wear and mellowed varnish: consistent with decades of domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century French Provincial hat and coat wall rack comes in golden-brown beech with a simulated bamboo finish. The turned wood structure includes a prominent central vertical hat arm with a circular top finial, flanked by two turned hanging pegs and a horizontal rail decorated with fine turned mouldings and raised rings. Small circular backplates sit behind the side pegs, and dark vertical bindings accent the main cylindrical bar. Measuring 48 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, this wall-mounted piece is traditionally placed beside the front door or in a hallway for hanging coats, hats, and scarves in a home today.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, simulated bamboo furniture features European hardwoods turned and hand-carved to mimic the natural nodes and profile of bamboo, reflecting the eras taste for Chinoiserie and Japonisme aesthetics.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense European hardwoods such as beech, maple, or fruitwood. The wood was turned on a lathe and finished with stain or burnt ring accents to replicate authentic bamboo joints.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display subtle variations in turned detailing, natural surface patination, historical mounting hardware, and minor timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the piece in an entryway, hallway, or dressing space above a low bench or console table to add textural warmth, organic structure, and historical contrast against neutral walls.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, keep away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the original finish.
