Description

Measuring 29cms w and 23cms h this is one of the largest pieces of prattware depicting lions we have ever seen.

In perfect unrestored condition bright colours it is a masterpiece from the prattware factory.

Great vivid colours and prattware typical naive portrayal of 2 lions.

We are dating it as around 1800 .could be a tad earlier.

The lower hole is a later addition.we think it was made to keep the plaque secure on a wall due to its size and weight.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Prattware refers to a type of English earthenware produced primarily in Staffordshire, Yorkshire, and Liverpool from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, typically characterised by underglaze colour decoration in blue, ochre, brown, and green.

These pieces were crafted from fine earthenware or pearlware clay bodies, shaped using press-moulds to create high-relief designs, and hand-painted with metallic oxide colours under a clear lead glaze before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics such as fine crazing in the glaze, hollow press-moulded backs, subtle brushwork variations in the oxide colours, and appropriate wear consistent with age, whereas reproductions often lack these subtle signs of period manufacture.

An antique relief plaque adds historical texture and focal depth when displayed on a plain neutral wall, mounted securely above a mantelpiece or integrated into a curated gallery wall alongside contemporary art.

Display pottery plaques away from direct sunlight and sources of extreme temperature fluctuation to protect the glaze and pigments, cleaning only gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding liquid cleaners.
