FAQs

Seventeenth-century Flemish wood carvings emerged from a rich tradition of baroque craftsmanship, heavily influenced by religious and mythological motifs, often integrated into cabinets, chests, and architectural joinery.

These pieces were typically crafted from native European hardwoods such as oak, shaped using hand chisels and gouges to create deep, high-relief sculptural designs.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks left by hand tools, the presence of period-appropriate timber shrinkage, dry oxidation patterns, and historical joinery methods consistent with the seventeenth century.

Such pieces can be mounted on walls as standalone artworks, integrated into custom cabinetry, or displayed on specialist stands to add texture and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the dry historic wood without sealing the surface.
