Description

Probably one of the best 17thc English mortars I have bought in a long time....it is turned out of lignum vitae and has "double" raised rib and incised line decoration....the mortar is in very good condition with a superb natural colour and patina....the pestle although early and also made out of lignum vitae, I feel is associated.... probably being made in the 18thc....also in very good condition with incised ring decoration and a very good colour.

English. C1660-80.

Treen refers to small, functional or decorative wooden household articles made before the mass-production era, typically hand-turned on a lathe or carved from native and exotic hardwoods during the seventeenth century.

Early mortars were predominantly turned from dense, heavy timbers such as lignum vitae, boxwood, or maple using a pole lathe, exploiting the grain to withstand heavy grinding without splitting.

Authentic pieces exhibit tool marks from lathe turning, deep natural patination, shrinkage cracks consistent with age, and dense, heavy wood species typical of the period rather than modern machine-finished surfaces.

Historic treen objects add warmth and organic texture when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables, contrasting effectively against clean, modern architectural lines.

Antique treen should be kept away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moisture. Occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the dry surface without harming the historic patina.
