Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This late 19th century Victorian dinner gong is formed of dark brown oak with brass hardware, presented in a Gothic revival style. The free-standing object comprises an arched top rail with intricate carved acanthus leaf decoration, supported by barley twist columns flanking a suspended circular brass disc. The lower section includes a scrolled lower frame, a beaded stretcher, and ornate scroll feet, accompanied by a hanging leather beater with a white woollen mallet head. The piece measures 126 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this striking acoustic piece fits ideally within an empty corner of a hallway, dining room, or living space to act as a traditional call to dinner or as a decorative focal point.

FAQs

A dinner gong is a percussion instrument mounted in a frame, traditionally struck in country houses during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to announce meal times to residents and staff.

Standing dinner gongs traditionally feature a suspended cast or beaten brass disc set within a solid timber frame, often constructed from carved oak, mahogany, or walnut with turned supports.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved woodwork details such as barley twist columns or acanthus leaves, along with heavy cast brass discs showing light surface patination and matching timber-handled strikers.

A carved timber dinner gong functions as a distinctive sculptural accent when placed in an entry hall, dining room corner, or alongside a fireplace hearth in classic or eclectic interiors.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically to preserve the timber finish, while cleaning the brass disc with specialised metal polish.
