FAQs

Early 20th-century French advertising signs were commonly commissioned by manufacturers and local merchants to promote everyday goods, textiles, and workwear on shopfronts and interior walls. Crafted predominantly in metal, they utilized bold graphics and distinctive typography to capture the attention of passers-by before modern mass-media advertising took hold.

These signs were typically manufactured using sheet metal or heavy iron plate, often finished with vitreous enamel, lithographed paint, or hand-painted lettering. The manufacturing process involved applying mineral-based colours fused at high temperatures to ensure durability against outdoor weathering.

Authentic period signs exhibit genuine signs of age, including natural oxidisation, chipping around the mounting holes, chalky surface wear, and authentic crazing of the paint or enamel layer. Modern reproductions often display artificial distressing, uniform weight, and lack the historical weight and structural patina characteristic of genuine items.

A vintage advertising sign introduces industrial character and a narrative focal point when mounted directly onto exposed brickwork, neutral plaster walls, or leaned against shelving units. It pairs effectively with reclaimed wood furniture and minimalist decor to balance historic texture with modern clean lines.

Preservation requires keeping the sign in a stable, dry environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent further corrosion or flaking of the paint surface. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners that could damage the historic finish.
