Description

Painted on plaster, this silhouette depicts an unknown lady wearing a dress with a frilled collar. Her hair is curled and upswept as was the Regency fashion.

The profile is set in a traditional papier-mache frame with an emblems (rose, thistle and shamrock) hanger and has the artist's trade label (no. 18) reverse.

Apart from dust under the convex glass, the silhouette is in fine condition. The frame is sound but shows craquelure and has the usual edge nibbles.

Preferring the simplicity and grace of a black profile, John Miers (1758-1821) did not believe in embellishing his silhouettes with gold. He used black soot mixed with beer to create a deep black colour that contrasted well with the shite of the plaster base. Frill and curl details are achieved by thinning the pigment to add texture.

Date of Manufacture

Wigs on the Green has dated this Antique Plaster Silhouette Portrait to the Regency era.

A plaster silhouette portrait is a profile likeness painted or cast in low relief, popular during the 18th and 19th centuries before the invention of photography.

Traditional silhouettes utilized plaster, card, glass, or ivory as a base, often housed in pearwood or papier-mache frames with brass bezels.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-correct framing, genuine craquelure on black japanned surfaces, and occasionally maker trade labels on the reverse.

These pieces work well grouped in gallery walls or mounted on narrow wall spaces to introduce historical contrast and intimate scale to contemporary rooms.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper fading, plaster degradation, and damage to the antique frame.
