This 18th-century Italian Rococo console table belongs to the period around 1770 and originates from Naples or Sicily. The piece consists of a serpentine breccia marble top resting on a frieze with a simulated Sicilian Jasper finish, supported by four reverse-scrolled cabriole legs decorated with acanthus leaf scroll carvings. The structure also includes a matching lower shelf with a mottled pattern finished in warm golden tones, resting on scrolled feet. Visible details include intricate carved flourishes along the upright supports and moulded edges on the marble surface, presenting a golden and multi-toned stone appearance. Measuring 80 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, this narrow console table fits easily beside the front door of a hallway or in a compact reception room as a surface for small decorative items.

Italian Rococo console tables from the 18th century are defined by their elaborate asymmetrical carving, flowing C-scrolls, acanthus foliage motifs, and gilded wood finishes, frequently crowned with real marble or scagliola tops.

These tables were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated with gesso and red or yellow clay bole, and finished with gold leaf via water gilding. Tops were crafted from solid sculpted marble, porphyry, or imitation scagliola.

Authentic pieces show natural hand-tool marks beneath the gesso, signs of timber shrinkage near joints, and localized wear revealing the reddish clay bole under the gold leaf. Water gilding from this era exhibits a distinct soft lustre rather than uniform modern gold paint.

Positioning an ornate giltwood table against a minimalist or dark accent wall creates a striking architectural focal point. It pairs well with modern abstract artwork suspended directly above or structured minimalist table lamps.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or goat-hair duster to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes entirely, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso ground beneath the gilding.
