This 18th century Italian Neoclassical console table operates as an elegant side table for living spaces, hallways or bedrooms. The rectangular furniture piece stands on four fluted tapered legs, measuring 85.5 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. The construction comprises wood, gesso, marble, paint, and gold leaf, finished in pale green and gold with a white marble top. The frieze incorporates carved rosettes, a triglyph pattern, and a central drop-down plaque featuring a carved fleur-de-lis motif. The painted frame displays visible age-related wear, and the fluted decoration is highlighted with gilding. Placed beside the front door or against a hallway wall, the table serves as a functional surface for displaying decorative items while adding classical architectural style to the interior.

FAQs

Popularised during the late 18th century, Italian Neoclassical console tables were influenced by classical antiquity, featuring straight fluted legs, symmetrical proportions, and decorative architectural motifs.

These tables were typically constructed from wood frames decorated with carved relief work, finished with hand-applied paint or water gilding over gesso, and fitted with natural marble tops.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age-related wear to the painted surface, layered gesso under gold leaf gilding, hand-carved details, and historical joinery techniques on the underside.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway beneath a large mirror, pairing the gilded finish with understated modern ceramics or contemporary artwork to create a balanced contrast.

Clean the stone surface with a pH-neutral cleaner, and dust the painted and gilded wood framework gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or solvent-based polishes.
