This eighteenth-century Italian Neoclassical console table combines rococo and neoclassical influences in a serpentine form. The piece has a painted and gilded cream frame with patinated silver gilt highlights, a classical mask and floral motif in the centre of the frieze, anthemion motifs on the knees, and gilded borders around the apron and legs. A fine shaped grey marble top with a moulded edge rests on the carved wooden base, supported by tapered legs with turned feet. The table measures 84 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 70 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a console or side table positioned beside the front door or in a hallway. It functions practically as a surface for lamps, keys, or decorative objects while providing a strong period design statement against an entrance wall.

18th-century Italian Neoclassical furniture is characterised by straight lines, symmetry, classical motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity, and architectural proportions, often finished in soft paint tones or leaf gilding.

Craftsmen typically constructed these tables from softwoods or carved hardwoods, applying gesso, distemper paint, and gold leaf, often topped with natural marble slabs or painted scagliola.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to painted surfaces, layer exposure such as reddish bole beneath gold leaf, hand-carved joinery marks, and aged patination across timber and stone components.

A painted console table functions as a focal piece in entryways or reception spaces, paired with contemporary artwork, minimalist lighting, or large mirrors to contrast classical ornamentation.

Maintain painted and gilded antiques by dusting with a soft, dry feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical solvent cleaners, or damp environments that cause gesso flaking.
