Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An early 19th-century Italian Rococo console table, fashioned from pine with a dark marble top and a distressed grey painted finish. The piece displays elaborate hand-carved decoration, featuring cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet, detailed acanthus leaf carvings, and a central cartouche motif on the apron. The visible signs of age include worn paintwork across the wooden structure and decorative mouldings. Measuring 83 cm high, 112 cm wide and 52 cm deep, this console table provides a functional surface for everyday use. Placed beside the front door or in a hallway, it serves as a practical landing spot for post, keys, and daily accessories while adding historical character to an interior.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century Italy, Rococo console tables were designed to stand flat against grand interior walls, often anchored beneath tall mirrors. Characterised by dramatic S-scroll cabriole legs, asymmetric organic carving, and decorative aprons, these pieces showcased elaborate craftsmanship influenced by contemporary French fashion.

These tables were typically carved from softwoods such as pine, lime, or poplar, or hardwoods like walnut. Carvings were covered in gesso before being finished with polychrome paint, gilding, or faux-marbling techniques, often topped with natural stone or painted timber surfaces.

Authenticity is indicated by evidence of historic hand-carving techniques, original peg or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and layered paint finish exhibiting natural wear and craquelure. The underside and back boards should display oxidation consistent with age, alongside mounting points tailored for period wall fixation.

Positioning a painted console table in an entry foyer or hallway provides a striking architectural focal point without taking up excessive floor depth. Pairing the distressed patina of historic wood carving with minimal modern artwork or contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Dust surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural feather duster to prevent flaking historic paint. Avoid using liquid cleaners, commercial polishes, or moisture, and maintain steady humidity levels away from direct heat sources to preserve gesso layers.
