This nineteenth-century Chinoiserie nest of four tables brings period character to a home. The set comprises four graduated wooden tables finished in dark red lacquer with hand-painted gold leaf decoration on the top surfaces. Each piece stands on turned spindle legs with carved foot details and a graduated frame connected by low stretchers. The timber exhibits minor historic knocks, marks, wear, imperfections, and repairs, along with some refinishing. In practical terms, the tables range from 55 cm wide by 34 cm deep by 72 cm high down to 34 cm wide by 27 cm deep by 65 cm high. This nest is suited for placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room or study. The tables can be nested together to save space or separated around a room for holding drinks and small lamps when entertaining guests.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European artistic decorative style influenced by East Asian art and design techniques, which gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional lacquered tables were crafted using solid timber frameworks coated with multiple layers of natural resin lacquer, which were subsequently detailed with gold leaf and hand-painted pigments.

Authentic 19th-century examples display fine hand-painted gilding showing age-appropriate wear, traditional joint construction, natural craquelure across the lacquered finish, and precisely fitted graduated frames.

Place the nested set alongside an armchair or sofa to introduce rich texture and historic detail, separating the individual tables when extra surfaces are required for entertaining.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, position the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, and avoid harsh chemical polishes or water.
