FAQs

A Victorian desk stand, often called an inkstand, is a desktop accessory designed to hold writing implements, inkwells, and sometimes auxiliary items like stamps or calendars, serving both a functional and decorative purpose in 19th-century studies.

These desk sets were constructed from a variety of materials, typically featuring wooden bases such as oak, walnut, or coromandel, paired with fitted glass inkwells and mounted with brass, bronze, or silver-plated components.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetailing, heavy cast metalwork, genuine cut glass or crystal inkwells with matching lids, and natural age-related patina on the metals and wood.

An antique inkstand can serve as a focal point on a modern executive desk or library table, combining historical character with functional desk organization amidst contemporary decor.

Maintain the wood with appropriate microcrystalline wax to preserve the finish, and clean the brass carefully using a soft cloth without abrasive polishes to protect the historical patina.
