Description

A wonderful and highly decorative desk or counter bell, my favourite kind with the more unusual clapper to the side rather than the ones you ring from the top. The hinged clapper is released and gives a clear and authoritative ring.

The reticulated base is particularly attractive with hand chased decoration.

A true Victorian example, the bell remains in superb condition, and working perfectly. 5" x 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" tall to top of finial.

FAQs

Counter and desk bells became widely used during the late 19th century in hotels, shops, and offices to summon service personnel efficiently.

These items were predominantly cast in brass, bronze, or copper, often featuring internal iron or steel mechanisms to produce a clear ring.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit heavy cast metal construction, natural patination, and traditional screw or pin assembly rather than modern welding.

Place the piece on a wooden console table, bookshelf, or home office desk to add a touch of historical metallic character and tactile interest.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes to preserve the aged surface patina and historical value.
