This unusual pair of Victorian Orientalist spelter figures dates from 1860 and depicts two males in traditional Moorish robes and headdresses, standing on ornate square bases. The figures are rendered in a dark brown and off-white cold-painted finish, wearing detailed draped garments and holding small items in their hands. Each sculpture stands atop a rectangular patterned base featuring textured drapery over a sturdy stool-like support, with intricate figurative detailing throughout the subjects. The pair measures 44 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. They suit placement on a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library as a decorative focal point.

Victorian Orientalist spelter figures are decorative metal sculptures produced during the late 19th century that depict stylized figures inspired by North African, Middle Eastern, and Asian cultures. They reflect the 19th-century European fascination with exoticism and decorative arts.

Spelter is a zinc-lead alloy that was widely used during the 19th century as a lighter and more affordable alternative to cast bronze. The finished castings were often patinated, bronzed, or cold-painted to achieve rich metallic or textured finishes.

Spelter is significantly lighter in weight than bronze and softer to the touch. When inspected beneath surface patination or wear, spelter reveals a greyish zinc metal underneath, whereas bronze exhibits a yellowish golden metal base.

A pair of decorative statues works exceptionally well flanking a central focal point, such as positioned at opposite ends of a fireplace mantelpiece or console table. They can also add architectural height and character when placed within a bookshelf or on top of a cabinet.

Dust figures gently with a dry, soft-bristle brush or microfiber cloth to avoid stripping the delicate patination or cold-painted surface. Avoid using liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, or water, which can cause oxidisation and damage the finish.
