Tilt-top tables, often referred to as snap-top tables, became prominent during the 18th century in Britain. They were designed to save space in smaller rooms by tilting the tabletop vertically against the wall when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed from hard timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. They typically feature a turned central column supported by three cabriole or snake-foot legs, joined via dovetail, tenon, or specialised latch mechanisms allowing the top to pivot.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-cut joints, timber shrinkage, peg construction, and natural wear patterns on the underside catch and pivot mechanism. Hand-turned details on the central pillar often reflect the specific toolmarks of the period.

An antique tripod table functions well as a versatile occasional piece next to a sofa or armchair, or positioned in an empty corner. Its compact footprint allows it to anchor minimalist spaces, providing a warm textural contrast against contemporary furnishings.

Antique timber should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Maintenance involves occasional gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying high-quality natural beeswax sparingly to nourish the grain.
